I'm surprised Monte didn't mention The Parlor Mob. They pull from the same 70s rock vein as stoner rock and they're a great live band. One could argue they are stoner rock with a Balck Crowes vibe. As an aside..ithe general perception is by the way if any band is doing a 70's rock throwback bluesy sabbath vibe and Thin lizzy like harmonizing guitar licks its instant - aahh another stoner band pingeon hole... kinda lame - where's the charlie sheen type in music industry when you need em?? maybe not..just saying. Seems there is this thing that music today has to be so categorized to the point of killing it.. Its refreshing to be generic once in a while... "what do they sound like dude?" Jus plain rock - listen, enjoy and stop analyzing it to death!! off the soap box now! Great interview JJ of the inner thoughts of a music business genius.

Source. [...]

JJ, Excellent interview. I am not a big fan of what Roadrunner does now, but Monte know his stuff. Too bad he can't help some of the better stoner bands because they don't have the selling potential. My favorite stoner rock album is also Fu Manchu's In Search of, produced by White Zombie's J by the way, who really blew that guitar sound of the planet. The Floodgate album has recently been reissued by Poland's Metal Mind. It was a fave of mine back when it came out. I guess I was one the few who bought it, somehow it hasn't aged that well. Or perhaps I have aged.

[...] The Obelisk, a new metal blog run by JJ Koczan of the now defunct Metal Edge Magazine, recently published a fascinating interview with Roadrunner Records A&R-king Monte Conner on the subject of stoner rock. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of the most famous and influential A&Rs in the history of metal, if not just for the interesting stoner rock subject matter? then for the industry / label politics / A&R talk. Monte speaks all about his stoner rock heroes from Kyuss to Fu Manchu to Queens of the Stone Age, spends a good deal of time talking about why Roadrunner never ventured far into the stoner rock foray (Karma to Burn excepted — and he goes in depth about them, too), the current state of stoner rock, and why it’s never become a commercially viable genre. Take a quick look at some of the interview highlights after the jump. [...]
